What you need to know
You don't need to have ever set foot in a kayak before to organise a paddling trip with us. We can advise you on the best options to suit you, and of course you will be given all the safety training and equipment you need from our highly certified guiding partners. Some moderate fitness levels would be beneficial, especially if you are going to be out for a whole day or multiple days.
The most important consideration for any kayaking trip is of course the weather. You will never be allowed to go out in conditions that are, or could become, unsafe.
Our partners will provided you with a boat (naturally!), the all important safety gear and a PFD (personal flotation device) with whistle.
Unless you can prove that you are a highly experienced and competent kayaker, rental companies will generally only rent double kayaks. This is because their extra stability makes then much safer and less prone to capsizing.
A change of clothing – shorts and tee shirt are fine for paddling during summer but always have a change of warm clothing i.e. shirts, long johns, polypropylene, socks.
Raincoat for on shore
Swimsuit
Sunscreen
Hat
Towel
Sandals, running shoes or other soft sole shoes for paddling.
Staying warm and dry is essential. The unpredictability of the New Zealand climate means you should always be prepared for bad weather at any time of year.
